Let’s Solar Dye Together! with Color Me Happy (Saturday morning)

Let’s Solar Dye Together!

This is the easiest way to learn about natural dyes and create unique yarn at the same time. We will create a solar dyed skein of sock weight (100g/400 yards) merino/cashmere/nylon yarn together using our solar dye kits.

The class itself will focus on different techniques — do you like an ombre look? variegated with lots of white showing through? or maybe a more tonal look? — and you will leave with your jar of yarn and dye materials ready to sit in the sun (or cook on the stove if you are in a hurry!).

No prior dyeing experience required.

The cost of the class (per person) includes 100 g of yarn (a skein of merino/cashmere/nylon blend sock yarn), natural dye materials, instruction, and a handout with resources.

Saturday, 9 am to 12 noon

Workshop fee: $60

Michelle Salyers and her friend Linda Williams established Color Me Happy Fiber Arts Studio in 2022 as a collaborative fiber arts studio focused on natural dyeing. We have been working together as researchers and teachers for 25 years, first as professors in an academic medical center, and now as natural dyers in a fiber arts studio. Both are well steeped in the world of fiber arts. Michelle has been knitting most of her life and also enjoys weaving and spinning. Linda grew up sewing and doing cross-stitch before finding knitting more than 25 years ago. During the pandemic, we came together to start a new venture that combines our love of fiber, nature, color, research, and teaching. We believe that color and creativity are key influencers of our mental and physical health, and that making things with natural materials is one way to ground and connect us to the ecological systems around us in ways that make us all healthy and happy.
